Canon Europe awarded global environmental ISO 14001 certificate

Five sales regions obtain ‘green’ status after surpassing environmental audit.

LONDON, October 18, 2005 – Canon Europe, world-leader in imaging and information technology solutions has successfully passed an environmental audit of its Canon Group Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in Finland, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland to be awarded ISO 14001 status in each of these countries, which will now join Canon’s global ISO 14001 certificate.

ISO 14000 is a series of international standards on environmental management. It provides a framework for the development of an environmental management system and the supporting audit programme. Whilst many organisations have introduced the ISO14001 standard within their own organisations, the implementation within Canon is unique as the Canon Group aims to have one global certificate for all business activities worldwide rather than individual certificates for disparate environmental management systems.

ISO 14001 is the corner stone standard of the ISO 14000 series. It specifies a framework of control for an Environmental Management System against which an organisation can be certified by a third party.  This standard was first published in 1996 and specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system. It applies to those environmental aspects which the organisation has control and over which it can be expected to have an influence.

This standard is applicable to any organisation that wishes to:

  • implement, maintain and improve an environmental management system
  • assure itself of its conformance with its own stated environmental policy (those policy commitments of course must be made)
  • ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations
  • seek certification of its environmental management system by an external third party organisation

Mr. Hajime Tsuruoka, President & CEO Canon Europe said: “Canon's corporate philosophy of ‘Kyosei’ literally means ‘living and working together for the common good’.  The ISO certification is testament to our commitment to supporting environmental awareness and being a responsible corporate citizen.  We are delighted to have gained this standard and will continue to roll out the EMS in other countries across Europe as part of the global plan to be compliant worldwide.”

May 2006 marks the next important milestone for Canon Europe, by which date the company aims to have its Environmental Management System in operation at its European headquarters and at all Canon sales regions across Europe.  The implementation process for Canon Europe's Emerging Markets Business Unit (which includes countries in Baltic States, Middle East and Africa) will continue until September 2007.
