Portugal is the most creative team in the UEFA EURO 2004™ quarter finals, according to the Canon Creative Play Index

  • Deco overtakes Zidane as the most creative player
  • Three of the four most creative teams go through to the semi finals
  • Creative Play Index predicts that the final will be between Portugal and the Czech Republic

LONDON, June 30, 2004 – Portugal is the most creative team of the UEFA EURO 2004™ quarter finals, with Deco now the tournament’s most creative player. And as if that weren’t enough for the host nation, the Portuguese team also possesses five of the top 50 most creative players – more than any other remaining team.

The Canon Creative Play Index has been devised by Canon Europe, official sponsor of the UEFA EURO 2004™ to rate the creativity of every team and player in the tournament. It is a new and unique way of looking at football, recording the flair and originality displayed by teams and players rather than simply measuring success. This is part of Canon’s campaign theme ‘With Imagination’, designed to show the level of creativity that can be achieved with their imaging products.

The latest official rankings were released today and are updated throughout the tournament, based on data from statistics experts OPTA. The Canon Creative Play Index can be viewed on the Eurosport website (www.eurosport.com) or by clicking on this link:Canon Creative Play

Creativity is the key
The results of the quarter finals demonstrate that creativity is key to winning football matches. Three of the four quarter finals were won by the team ranked highest for creativity according to the Canon Creative Play Index. Portugal (ranked 1st), The Czech Republic (ranked 2nd) and Holland (ranked 4th) all beat less creative opponents and progressed to the semi finals. The one exception to the rule was Greece, ranked 15th (second bottom), who triumphed against the more creative, but less effective French team.

Creativity in football leads to goal-scoring chances. Assuming that each team scores a similar proportion of shots, the Canon Creative Play Index can be used to predict the winners of the semi finals, based on their creativity rankings:

  • Portugal (1st) versus Holland (4th) – Portugal to win in a close, entertaining match
  • Czech Republic (2nd) versus Greece (15th) – Czechs to outclass resilient Greeks

The Canon Creative Play Index is updated after every match and is freely available for media use throughout UEFA EURO 2004™.

To support Canon’s Creative Play concept, throughout the tournament Eurosport viewers will be shown the tournament’s most creative pieces of football and asked to vote for their favourite by SMS or online at a specially created ‘Canon Creative Play’ microsite onwww.eurosport.com/gamezone. By voting, viewers are entered into a daily draw to win one of 25 prize packages consisting of a Canon IXUS 300 or IXUS 430 digital camera and CP-300 card photo printer.
